Tello 4G LTE coverage
Tello is powered by the T-Mobile 4G LTE network, offering the same nationwide coverage that reaches over 99% of Americans. As a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), Tello uses T-Mobile's cell towers — you get identical coverage at a fraction of the cost.
Tello has consistently been one of the best-value MVNOs on the T-Mobile network. With plans starting at just $5/month and no contracts, it's one of the cheapest ways to access T-Mobile's infrastructure. Our testing shows no difference in call quality or coverage compared to T-Mobile direct.
You can check Tello coverage in your area using your ZIP code to verify service where you live, work, and travel.
What towers does Tello use?
Tello operates on the T-Mobile network, so you'll have access to the same nationwide 4G LTE coverage and 5G where it's available. T-Mobile has the largest 5G network in the US, and Tello customers benefit from every network expansion.
Tello doesn't build or maintain its own towers — they lease network access from T-Mobile at wholesale rates and pass those savings directly to you. This is why Tello can offer unlimited talk, text, and data for as little as $25/month when T-Mobile charges $75+ for similar service.

How good is Tello coverage?
Tello coverage is as good as T-Mobile's coverage — because it is T-Mobile's coverage. You're connecting to the same towers, using the same frequencies, and reaching the same coverage area that T-Mobile's 100+ million customers use.
T-Mobile consistently ranks as the fastest nationwide network in Ookla Speedtest data, with median 4G download speeds of nearly 189 Mbps and 5G speeds over 238 Mbps. RootMetrics gives T-Mobile an 87/100 overall score, and OpenSignal rates them 8.8/10 for user experience.
During periods of extreme network congestion, T-Mobile direct customers may receive slightly higher data priority. In our experience, this rarely impacts everyday use — streaming, browsing, and video calls all work smoothly on Tello.

Does Tello have 5G?
Yes, Tello 5G coverage is available with a 5G-compatible device. Since Tello runs on T-Mobile's network, you get access to the largest 5G network in the US — covering over 300 million people with low-band and mid-band 5G.
T-Mobile's 5G network spans all 50 states, and Tello customers connect to it automatically with a compatible device. No special plan or add-on required — 5G access is included with every Tello plan.
Most smartphones released since 2021 support 5G. If you're unsure, check your device specs or enter your ZIP code to see what's available in your area.
Is Tello CDMA or GSM?
T-Mobile uses GSM technology, so Tello is compatible with all GSM and LTE phones. Since T-Mobile shut down its older 3G GSM network in 2022, all connections now use 4G LTE or 5G — making the CDMA vs. GSM question mostly academic.
Any unlocked phone that supports T-Mobile's LTE bands (primarily bands 2, 4, 12, 66, and 71) will work with Tello. Most phones sold in the US since 2015 meet this requirement.
To check compatibility, visit Tello's page or use their IMEI checker. If your phone is unlocked and supports LTE, you're almost certainly good to go.
